Tree Towel
This mixed media piece celebrates the many significant trees found in the Sidmouth Arboretum. The artwork is a capriccio - a fantasy, whimsical interpretation of the layout of trees depicted in this traditional renaissance style.
Tree Towel was created as a celebration, fundraising and awareness raising piece - presenting the many wonderful specimens of trees found in the towns Civic Arboretum - an area which covers the whole town - the only such arboretum designation in the country.
East Devon Artist Rebecca Lockyear choose to depict the trees in the typical Renaissance Cappricio style which elevates their towering elegance and emphasises their beauty further in the way there are laid out, adding an ethereal feel to the work.
The artwork features more than a dozen international trees, from the Monterey Cypress and Pine from California to the Wedding Cake and Foxglove trees from China and Korea.
These are interspersed in a capriccio of some of Sidmouth's iconic buildings.
The artwork has been produced as a Tree Towel to purchase from the Sidmouth Tourist Information Centre in support of the work of the towns Arboretum.
Sidmouth Arboretum produces a range of tree trails guiding people round local parks and gardens.
There is now a trail available that will allow you to visit and learn more about each of the trees in the capriccio.
