Riverfly/Opening The Sid

Confluence – The River Sid and Its Tributaries

Twin installations showcasing the work of children, young people and adults, each beautifully composed, invite us to look at the invertebrates, birds, fish and mammals found in our river.

The Micro Museum of Antiquities housing "Riverfly" presents a scene that reminds us of the vital work of the River Sid Catchment Group and their Riverfly Monitoring work to record these creatures who depend on clean water.

This installation with invertebrates as if viewed through a magnifying glass, invites us to view through the lens of community scientists. The ‘petri dish art’ illustrated by children and young people of Sidmouth includes mayflies, caddis flies and stoneflies – important indicators of our river’s health.

Whilst the Micro Museum of Contemporary Art houses "Opening The Sid",  follows the river’s flow, through the valley to the sea, habitat for fish, birds, mammals, invertebrates and plants, the lifeblood of the valley.

The River Sid Catchment Group and others are working to open the Sid to help migratory species like salmon and eels, to move freely.

Art and Nature connect here, valuing this special place and reminding us “our river, our responsibility.”

Featuring the art work created by Year 5's at Sidmouth and Sidbury Primary Schools, the Sid Valley Memory Cafe and young people at Sidmouth Science Festival, the installations are part of a wonderful co-creation project - read about it here Confluence – The River Sid and Its Tributaries .
